Looking for a place in Toronto can be frustrating as places go quickly, landlords require a wack of information and organizing viewings with roommates can be difficult with full time jobs. There are 4 websites that are extremely helpful in looking for places and making the search as easy as possible. All of them have their pros/cons but are all worth checking out.

1. Padmapper

This website is great because you can see exactly where the units are located so if you have a specific neighbourhood in mind, its easy to focus on their area you are interested in. This website picks up a lot of the listings from Craigslist and Kijiji so there is lots of variety.

2. Viewit

This website is much like Padmapper but I find that there are not as many listings and it is not updated as frequently. You are able to narrow your search based on a wide range of criteria and then you have a choice to view your results in a list or on a map.

3. Craigslist/Kijiji

These websites are not as easy to use because there is not mandatory information that must be included in listing descriptions so it can leave you guessing and with lots of questions. Things like bedroom size, pets and parking are often missed so it leave a lot of room for speculation especially when there are no pictures. But if you look hard enough, you can really find some hidden gems.

4. MLS

This website uses real estate agents and I find the prices tend to by higher because these agents take a commission off the rental unit which drives the price up. If you want help from an agent, they will search for you and send you spaces they think will fit your budget.

All in all, this process is painful but worth it once you find a great space to call your own. There are things you need in advance like a credit check , proof of employment and a letter of reference and it makes it easy to go into viewings with these documents in hand so you can make an offer once you’ve found what you are looking for.

Good luck!!
