It’s very clear that the city of Toronto is obsessed with the hamburger. Granted, nothing else really compares to the satisfaction of eating a juicy burg topped with The Option (Priest fans you know wa’ I’m talking about) or a anything off the menu at Holy Chuck but another shop has opened up on Queen West and it has grabbed this Hamburgeller’s attention. During a menu tasting at Parts and Labour in Parkdale yesterday, we were informed of their new burger shop opening that will be some stiff competition to the other hot spots in the area. Under the same management as P&L, this malt shop is set up for success and with a minimalist menu in which they promise to do a few things really, really well. I’m really looking forward to trying this place out when it opens in a couple of days!

Last year was our first year attending the notorious food & wine expo held at the MTCC and it was quite a fun experience. It was great to try some new things; different wines pairings, some tasty grub and we even got to meet Matt and Steve, the founders of those delicious spicy beans! We could not hold back when we saw the Fireball station and spent more tickets than I would like to remember, meanwhile trying to make best friends with the promo girls for more Fireball swag (we wore it proud!). All in all, fun night, expect to drop a minimum of $50 if you want the full experience but keep in mind not to go with a big group because it is craayy busy. Cheers!
Okay IRVers, our whole lives we’ve heard it is so important it is to eat breakfast however day after day we pick up a coffee and forgo starting our metabolism with some sort of solid food. Quinoa porridge is actually the answer to all problems. It can be made in a big batch, customizable to include any toppings your heart desires and really fills you up. This morning I added some almonds, frozen berries and a dollop of yoghurt and was just on cloud nine. Give it a try once and I promise, you will be making it on the regular. Apartment hunting can work up quite an appetite so IRV stopped over at The Fish Shop on College for a quick bite and the grilled fish truly is everything its cracked up to be. We both were feaning a wholesome salad so we ordered a bed of greens topped with the fish of the day which was grouper. It was so tasty and perfectly seasoned and was definitely great value for its $11 price point. This shop is fresh fresh fresh and a perfect place to pick up dinner on the way home from a long day of work when you want something nutricious that doesn’t sacrifice taste. Skip it for date night as there are only a few picnic tables outside for sitting… unless you’re grabbing something quick on your way for an stroll in Bellwoods park.
So everyone and their Uncle is talking about Rock Lobster and after going out for dinner on Tuesday for a celebratory back-to-school dinner, it’s not hard to see why. The seafood was out-of-this-world fresh, the atmosphere inviting and electric and the staff was more than hospitable, resulting in an insta favourite. The cocktail list looked sensational with most drinks requiring a special twist or homemade touch alas our starter course consistent of oysters ($2.25/e) so I opted out for a Guinness. For my main, I got 2 lobster tacos ($5/e) and my sister got the lobster roll ($14) and both were simple yet delicious and highlighted the fresh Atlantic lobster. Sure it was busy, yah okay it was crowded, however this place defines “hot spot” and with food this good, it’s worth any wait. There are two locations; the original one on Ossington and their new shop on Queen just east of Bathurst. Looking forward to going back!
I can hear my university self jumping for joy at the very thought that the McDouble could possibly be the “cheapest, most nutritious and bountiful food that has ever existed in human history?” At a whooping $1.39, the amount of calories, protein, iron and so on have the best street value compared to any other fast food. I’m not a huge fan of McDonalds (excluding mornings with a level 10 hangover) and the guilt I have for treating myself definitely does not outweigh the 10 minutes of taste bud bliss, however, you have to hand it to McDonalds for setting a certain standard and delivering it 100% of the time. I’m going to stick with my salad for lunch today, but if I’m ever short on the daily caloric intake, I can depend on my McDouble to fill me up and get the biggest bang for my buck.
